DIY fixes for the most common printer issues

Before booking any paid help, try these quick self-checks. Each one takes just a few minutes and solves the issue for many users.

Paper jam won't clear

Tray & feed issues
  1. Turn the printer off and unplug it before reaching inside.
  2. Open every access point — rear panel, top cover, and tray — to check for hidden paper.
  3. Pull jammed sheets slowly in the direction they'd normally feed, never backward.
  4. Check for small torn scraps left behind, then reload paper and power back on.
If the jam sensor still shows an error after removing all paper, it may need a longer reset — see our full guide.

Printer shows offline

Wi-Fi & connection
  1. Confirm the printer's Wi-Fi light is solid, not blinking or off.
  2. Restart your router and the printer, then wait a full minute before reconnecting.
  3. On your computer, remove the printer and re-add it from your device list.
  4. Set it as the default printer again if a second "offline" copy appears.
Still offline after a restart? A stuck IP address is the usual cause — our full guide covers checking it.

Print job stuck in queue

Printing issues
  1. Open your printer's queue window and cancel the stuck document.
  2. Restart the print spooler service (Windows) or reset the printing system (Mac).
  3. Send a small test print, like a single text page, before your full document.
  4. Re-send your original file once the queue shows as empty.
Large image or PDF files are the most common cause of a stuck queue — try printing a smaller file first.

Blurry or streaky prints

Print quality
  1. Run the built-in print head cleaning or nozzle check from your printer's menu.
  2. Confirm ink or toner cartridges are seated fully and not low.
  3. Use plain paper for the test — glossy or damp paper can cause streaks too.
  4. Repeat cleaning up to two more times if the first pass doesn't fully clear it.
If lines persist after three cleaning cycles, the cartridge itself may need replacing.

Computer can't find printer

Drivers & detection
  1. Make sure the printer and computer are on the exact same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Check for a pending driver update in your operating system's settings.
  3. Temporarily disable any active VPN, which can hide devices on your network.
  4. Reinstall the driver from the manufacturer's official site if it's still missing.
Never download drivers from third-party sites — always use the manufacturer's official download page.

Blinking error light

Error codes
  1. Count the blink pattern or note the exact code shown on the display.
  2. Open the cartridge and tray doors fully, then close them again firmly.
  3. Power cycle the printer by unplugging it for 30 seconds.
  4. Look up the specific code in the manufacturer's manual if the light stays on.
A power cycle resolves the majority of blinking-light errors that aren't hardware faults.
